Introduction

Information Technology has become part of our daily life and affects every profession. Therefore, there are new skill requirements for working in today's economy either directly as a computer professional or as an end user.


Computer Professionals

Computer Professionals could be one of the following:


  • Computer Manager
  • System analyst
  • Programmers
  • Computer engineers and technicians
  • Operators


Computer Manager

Computer Manager is an Individual who works in the computer field by planning and directing functions relating to information technology, data Processing, systems analysis or Programming.

System Analyst

System analysts are responsible for researching, planning, coordinating and recommending software and system choices to meet an organization's business requirements. A system analyst must acquire four skills anyalytical, technical, managerial and interpersonal.

Analystical skills help system analysts to understand the organization and it's functions. Technical skills help to understand the potential and the limitations of information technology. Management skills help to manage projects, risk and change.

Interpersonal skills help system analysts workwithend users.

Programmers

Is someone who wrote project specifications and statement of problems and procedures to flow charts for coding into computer language. Develop and write computer programs to store locate and retrieve specific information. Programmers work in many settings including corporate informationtechnology departments, big software companies and small service forms.

Computer Educator

Is an individual who teaches the basics of computer, he also trains on the usage, maintenance, repairs and services.


Computer Engineer

They are the computer designers, including the creation of computer components,networking design and integrating software options with the hardware that will drive the applications. Another task associated with the computer engineer include software design that is customized for a particular industry type.

Computer Technician

Is a person who repairs, troubleshoot and modify Computers and services. The responsiblity mày extend to include building or configuring new hardwares.

Computer Operators

Operate and manage the use of hardware systems, networks. They should be capable to solve technical problems.


QUALITIES OF GOOD COMPUTER PROFESSIONALS

Good computer Professionals must posses the following qualities.

  • Managerial and Administrative ability
  • Flexibility and open mindedness
  • Disciplined approach to professional issues
  • Good memory and ability to concentrate
  • Patience and preserverance
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately
  • A good listener with good writing skills
  • Good working relationship with other team members.

Computer bodies in Nigeria include:

  1. Nigeria Computer Society (NCS)
  2. Nigeria Professional Registration Council of Nigeria (CPRCN)
  3. Nigeria Internet Group(NIG)
  4. Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN)
  5. Institute of Management Information System (IMIS)


Nigeria Computer Society (NCS)


Function

  • To bring together Nigerians around the globe working or interested in computer technology
  • To support and encourage IT in Nigeria
  • To ensure that all Nigerians within Nigeria have access to computers
  • To promote a forum for technology development and utilization in Nigeria
  • To promote computer training and to encourage researches and studies in Computer


Computer Professional Registration Council of Nigeria was establish through act no 49 of 1993


Functions

  • To organize and supervise computing practice in the country
  • To determine what standards of knowledge and skills are to be attained by person's seeking to become members of the computing profession and improving those standards from time to.te as circumstances may permit.
  • Control of the practice of computing in the coumtry

Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN)

Information Technology Association of Nigeria was established in 1991 as Microcomputer Vendors Association of Nigeria


Funtions

  • To enhance ITskills among pupils and students in primary and secondary schools in Nigeria.
  • To change the learning eneviromert in the primary and secondary schools to improve on stude.ysdigital Capacity


Nigeria Internet Group (NIG)

Nigeria Internet Group is a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to the promotion of the internet in Nigeria.


Functions

To bring rapid development to rural internet penetration

Internet infrastructure development

Hosting of the country's top level domain locally


Institute for the Management of Information System (IMIS) 

Institute for the Management of Information System is an international Professionals association devoted to supporting and promoting the profession of information systems management
